Character Profile for Penny Drow

Penny Drow

Year: Second-year student
Focus: Etheric Navigation & Aural Geomancy

Appearance:
A scatter of freckles across her nose, coppery hair perpetually coming loose from its braid, and a gaze that never quite focuses on the same place twice. Her uniform is always a little misbuttoned, her pockets full of crumpled maps and wind compasses. She carries a small, self-winding pocket gyroscope that spins whenever she’s about to get lost — which is often.

Personality:
Dreamy, absent-minded, and deeply intuitive. Penny wanders the grounds as if following invisible threads, sometimes ending up in places no one should be able to reach. She forgets names and directions but remembers feelings, patterns, and echoes. She has an uncanny sense for when something is wrong — especially near water.

Talents & Interests:

  • Sensitive to aetheric currents and spatial distortions — can “feel” the hum of ley lines beneath her feet.

  • Sketches her routes in looping diagrams no one else can read.

  • Collects discarded bits of machinery to use as “directional charms.”

  • Has a quiet obsession with the sound of running water.

Relationships:

  • Mira: Mutual fascination — Mira wants to understand Penny’s intuition, while Penny trusts Mira’s steadiness.

  • Nell: Treats her like a lost pet, half-teasing and half-protective.

  • Hester: Silent companionship — Hester fixes Penny’s broken compasses without being asked.

  • Lorien: Listens to her ramblings with patience; he’s one of the few who believes she’s truly perceiving something real.

Arc / Function:
Penny is the story’s compass that can’t point north. Her disorientation masks a deeper sensitivity to the lake’s expanding influence. As the story unfolds, her “lostness” becomes revelation: she alone can sense the connections others ignore. She bridges the physical and the unseen, grounding the ethereal in wonder.
