Character Profile for Ned Bower

Ned Bower

Year: Third-year student
Focus: Poetic Mechanics / Experimental Communication Devices

Appearance:
Medium height and stocky, with a perpetually rumpled aesthetic that could be mistaken for rebellion if it weren’t so sincere. His dyed hair (currently eggplant purple with black streaks) falls across one eye, giving him a permanently brooding air. Ink stains, frayed cuffs, and the faint smell of brass polish follow him everywhere.

Personality:
Romantic, introspective, and prone to melodrama, Ned is the kind of student who writes poetry on the backs of schematics. He’s clever and imaginative but distractible — more interested in the meaning of a thing than in making it work perfectly.

He takes himself seriously, though everyone around him knows not to. Still, there’s something magnetic about his sincerity. His emotional honesty makes him both a terrible liar and a surprisingly good friend.

Talents & Interests:

  • Obsessed with communication — both mechanical and emotional.

  • His ongoing project: a sympathetic device for translating the signals of small animals (currently squirrels).

  • Writes poetry that he insists is “for calibration purposes.”

  • Collects discarded clock parts and bird feathers.

Relationships:

  • Nell (younger sister): Alternately her greatest tormentor and staunchest defender. He finds her mechanical brilliance intimidating but would duel anyone who said she was smarter than him.

  • Mira: He likes teasing her and trying (failing) to get under her skin.

  • Lorien: Mutual respect tinged with misunderstanding; Ned thinks Lorien could use a little poetry in his life.

  • Hester: He’s fascinated by her prosthetic and sometimes asks invasive questions he instantly regrets.

Arc / Function:
Ned represents the bridge between invention and emotion — the heart trying to learn the language of machines. His “squirrel communicator” becomes both comic relief and, later, a symbolic echo of the lake’s mysterious voice.
